site flying social distancing amidst covid-19

4/20/2020

1. Please observe social distancing. Driving up to launch in large groups and in an enclosed space is not recommended for now. One option is to have a driver take gear up to launch then hike up, or ride up in a pick up box seperate from the driver and...wear masks.

2. Please do not visit any flying sites or flight park areas if you are sick or health compromised in any way.

3. Please bring your own hand sanitizer and use it. Do not touch other peoples gear.

4. Please bring your own drinking water and don't share it.

5. Please fly with extra care and caution ...our first responders may be busy.

OSA GENERAL MEETING CANCELLED

4/20/2020

Amidst the COVID-19 outbreak our OSA general meeting will be cancelled in May. The next set meeting date will be in August. Hopefully by then everything will have settled down. Also Norm and Trevor are hoping to set up the weather station at Coopers within the next few weeks. I will post a link for the weather station once it's live. Freedom Flight Park will be open for flying this year however if you are not on Randy's email list then please contact him in regard to what is expected in relation to COVID-19. We have all been flying at King Eddy now and the road up is pretty good and the trail hike-able. A lot of the flyers have been using the logging road up the front face of Eddy to hike up. I was flying yesterday and thermals were lovely. Just remember that our flight path is in airport air traffic airspace flight path. Here is a link to site info https://www.flyok.ca/phpbb3/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=139. Happy flying everyone. WE HAVE NEW HELMET STICKERS. They can be mailed if necessary. Just contact me through messenger or flyoksafety@gmail.com.

OSA ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING UPDATE

11/5/2019

Every year BCHPA (BC Hangliding and Paragliding Association) holds their annual meeting in a different location in the province. This year they have decided on Vernon and will be holding their board meeting in conjunction with ours on Sunday November 17, 2019. This is the time to come and meet the board members as well as ask your questions and present your ideas.
If you are a paid member of HPAC then some of the funds that we pay go to BCHPA to help support the free flying community in BC. They are the organization that is helping us fund some of the cost for our weather stations and have also provided funds for Mara launch improvement, Flyhills launch build and I believe some funds were contributed to King Eddie for launch improvement as well as Coopers.

Don't miss this special meeting in Vernon
November 17th
Alexander's Beach Pub
12408 Kalamalka Road
Meeting will start at 7:15

Due to the size of the meeting we may have to change the venue. We will keep everyone posted.

FLYIN AT KING EDDIE VERNON BC

8/19/2019

Why Nine Ravens? You'll have to ask Eddy.

In conjunction with Okanagan Soaring Association, Eddy Rivera is hosting a Fly-In at King Eddy Mountain, Vernon B.C. This is the first fly-in in some years to happen at King Eddie and was host to a number of hang glider events such as the Canadian National Hang Gliding Competition. King Eddy is located at the end of the Coldstream Ranch cornfield off Hwy 6.

King Eddy is a great morning and afternoon flying site and can work up until sunset with some great convergence in the evenings. There is an upper and lower launch and it is an easy flight to Glenn's from upper launch. The road to the launch entrance is well maintained and can be accessed by car. Once you reach the launch entrance you will need to hike up or go up in a truck. The hike from the main road is an easy 10 minute hike.

DATE: Saturday August 31 - Sunday September 1, 2019
FEE: $15 per person
PILOT MEETING: King Eddy LZ 11:00 am Saturday and Sunday mornings
OSA (or reciprocal) membership and HPAC required

All paragliding and hang gliding pilots, P2, H2 and up are welcome. If you are from out of country there is a visiting pilots fee and temporary HPAC is required regardless of what your country membership says. This is to make sure you are covered under HPAC insurance.

The tasks will be best distance over two days with a spot landing competition on Sunday. BBQ will be held at Glenn Derouin's, Paraglide Canada at 7 pm.
BYO food, drinks and chairs. There will be a bbq available for cooking.
Weather dependant.

There will be local camping available at
FREEDOM FLIGHT PARK which Randy Rauck graciously offered, there is a camping fee there, $20 per night for tenting or sleeping in your car, $50 for campers and trailers. There is free wifi at the pilots lounge. If you want to spend time at Randy's flying there is a visitors fee. Address is: 249 Mabel Lake Rd, Lumby BC, V0E 2G5.

PARAGLIDE CANADA where Glenn Derouin has generously opened up his property for camping at $10 per person. I imagine he has wifi but please check with him. Address is: 6857 Hwy 6, Coldstream BC, V1B 3H1.

LUMBY LION'S CAMPGROUND is located in Lumby. They have laundry facilities and showers. Address is: 2215 Shields Ave., Lumby BC V0E 2G0.
There are other campgrounds around the area but these are the closest ones.

If anyone in the Lumby/Lavington area has available space for camping please let us know through email or Facebook Messenger, or contact us through our contact info on this site. We look forward to having you all there.
